I just wanted to tell the story of our experience in using the new biological Bio Safe Pit Treatment product. As with everyone, we have looked at and used a few of the products on the market but had a hard time figuring out if they were worth the dollars spent on them. Here is what we have found when we started using the Bio Safe biological product.
•We have a 1000 head finishing unit with Y gutters that flush into an open lagoon. When building the lagoon, we had enough room to add another 1000 head barn but never did. The lagoon was twice as big as needed so we never had to pump it off as it would aerate enough to never fill up. After 15 years of not pumping we could see that it was filling up with solids so we started pumping the lagoon out through a regular pivot system. We could not stir the lagoon, just pumped the liquid off the top, not wanting to plug pivot sprinklers. Once pumped down, you could see that the sides of the lagoon would be channeled down through the solids as the liquid was pumped out. In talking with Bio Safe reps, they said we could get the solids to break down and be able to pump most of it out through the pivot without stirring and have more nutrients available for crops. We treated the existing lagoon and Y gutters one time with the Bio Safe Pit Treatment, then only the Y gutter after that. Six months later, we pumped the lagoon onto our growing corn crop and found that not only could we pump more out of the lagoon, but the sides of the lagoon were smooth all around. The biological bugs seemed to eat away the solids in the sides so the liquid did not channel down making the whole lagoon more consistent. We were also able to pump more out of the lagoon. This was after only six months of these bugs working in the lagoon. We are impressed and are looking forward to seeing what we can do next year after a whole year of treatments.
•We also have a smaller 400 head finisher built in the late 80”s with a Y gutter system that goes into a 40’X60’X12’ deep concrete pit. We had the drop out of this barn to pipe to the pit 150’ away so we thought we were smart and made it 12’ deep for more capacity. We have always had problems with this pit because the manure would get thick towards the bottom causing the pump to suck air, losing prime and we would be done. We tried everything adding more water throughout the year but that kind of defeated the purpose of making it deeper. We even pumped it ½ way down then added 3 to 4’ of water and stirred it up and pumped again, which helped but was expensive and time consuming. In all we have tried, it has always been a headache for years, so at some point you just give up and use the top portion and pump more often! Last year when pumping and adding water getting it down, we even slugged the manure wagon when we sucked the solids up when getting down! Not fun cleaning that mess up either! We began treating the pit with the biological product, treating both the pit and Y gutters twice, once on May 22nd and once on Sept. 2nd and then pumped the pit mid-October. Our normal practice was to stir the pit 6 hours prior to pumping. This year we put the pump in the pit and started it up, the pit appeared to be very fluid. Our local hauler was ready to pump so we started pumping right away hauling with 2- 7500 gallon wagons and had the pit pumped within the normal stirring time. To our surprise, the manure was very consistent top to bottom and we were able to pump the pit to within a couple inches of the bottom! Same pump we have used for the last 10+ years and never did anything different other than biological product! We have never seen anything like this in 30+ years of pumping! This has made a believer out of us. Now for the cost; we used 7 gallons of product in this pit, at $42.00 per gallon =$294.00. The cost of 6 hours to stir prior to pumping@ a conservative $50/ hour would be $300.00, so we washed even just on prior stirring costs!! Leaving all the other benefits that the product claims to do and help with as a bonus to our operation!!
Next up is to pump a 1st year 2400 head deep pit barn that we have been treating the same times as the above pits and lagoon. Needless to say, I’m not expecting any problems that I tend to hear from both producers and pumping personnel. Try it on your worst pit and it will make a believer out of you and it won’t rob your back pocket either. In fact, it may even make you some $$’s!!
We have also began using a New Bio-Dissolve biological disinfectant that contains a syergized blend of lipase organisms specifically designed to work in the Agriculture Industry. Bio-Dissolve is biodegradable and eco friendly designed to repel Bacteria/Fungi and viruses, even the difficult ones in livestock facilities with no odors!! These Bio products work on all animal manures and compliment each other as most disinfectants on the market contain products that may have negative effects or kill bugs in the pits!
Please feel free to give me a call with any questions you may have.
